How We Test & Score Products

Last updated: July 11, 2026  ·  Ecoera.Life  ·  [email protected]

Summary: Every product on Ecoera.Life is scored on the Ecoera Score (0–100), a composite of five factors below. No brand can pay to appear in or be elevated within our rankings. Samples provided by brands never influence scoring.

The Ecoera Score

Every product we recommend gets an Ecoera Score from 0–100. It's calculated from five weighted factors:

30%
Material & certification depth — is the "eco" claim backed by a specific, named, checkable certification, or just marketing language?
25%
Verified sourcing & manufacturing claims — do the brand's own disclosures and third-party certification data agree?
25%
Real-world durability — does it hold up after weeks of actual daily use, not just first impressions?
10%
Global sales data — is this a product people can actually and reliably buy, at a consistent price?
10%
Aggregated user feedback — what do verified buyers report after real-world use?

The weighting above is deliberately tilted toward certification and durability (55% combined) rather than price or popularity, because those are the two factors most "greenwashed" marketing tries to paper over.

Certifications We Look For

We don't treat all "eco" labels equally. Below are certification families we specifically check for and verify against the certifying body's public registry where one exists:

GOTS (organic textiles) FSC (responsibly sourced wood/paper) B Corp Certified EPA Safer Choice OEKO-TEX Standard 100 Fair Trade Certified USDA Organic Non-GMO Project Verified OMRI Listed Leaping Bunny (cruelty-free) EWG Verified Climate Neutral Certified 1% for the Planet bluesign Approved

Unregulated terms like "natural," "green," or "eco-friendly" with no named certification behind them are treated as marketing language, not evidence — a product can still score well without one of the certifications above if the brand publishes verifiable, specific sourcing data instead, but a bare marketing claim on its own does not move the score.

Our Testing Process

1. Selection

We prioritise sub-categories where "eco" claims are common in marketing but hard for an average shopper to verify — that's deliberately the opposite of chasing whatever's trending on social media.

2. Real-world testing

Where a product category allows it, our buyers use products for an extended period (commonly 6–12 weeks, noted on each review) under normal daily conditions before publishing a verdict. Test length and conditions are disclosed at the top of each buyer review.

3. Certification verification

We check each certification claim against the certifying body's public registry or documentation where available, rather than taking a brand's own claim at face value.

4. Scoring & ranking

Each product is scored using the weighted formula above. The top 3 scoring products in a sub-category are published as our ranked picks.

5. Ongoing review

Certifications can lapse and formulations can change after we publish. See "Keeping Coverage Current" below for how we handle this.

What We Don't Do

Keeping Coverage Current

Certification status, formulations, and sourcing can change after we publish. Rankings are reviewed and refreshed on a rolling basis, and we prioritise re-checking older reviews when we're notified of a change. If you spot something out of date, our corrections process is the fastest way to get it fixed.
